How to Stop Procrastinating?

Kasno poslijepodne, a ja još uvijek nisam krenula raditi na važnom zadatku.

Poznato? I mislila sam. Bez brige, nisi sam.

Shvatila sam okrutnu istinu.

Kako sam to riješila?

Prvo, morala sam shvatiti zašto to želim radit.

Nije uvijek lagano. I nekad je dan glup i ništa mi ne ide.
Ponekad dolaze nove i teže stvari.

Znaš zašto želiš to? Ok, sada nemoj čekati savršeni trenutak da to napraviš, jer neće doći. Perfekcionizam je najveći neprijatelj produktivnosti. Čekanjem i odgađanjem će ti biti još gore. Napravi prvi korak, prvi najmanji korak, i napravi ga do kraja.

Traveling to Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Late afternoon, and I still didn’t start on that important task. How time flies so fast? At the same time, my brain sends me a million excuses why not to do it.

Sounds familiar? I thought so. Don’t worry, you’re not alone.

Procrastination is a trap that many of us fall into.
Procrastination is often confused with laziness, but there is a big difference between these two terms. When you are lazy then you have no will to do anything while procrastination describes the situation when you delayed some important and sometimes unpleasant task, and at the same time, you’re working on less important tasks.

In procrastination situations, you’re often looking for something to motivate you but…

You seek motivation everywhere around, but the secret to motivation is very simple – it’s already inside of you.

There are three simple things that help me to stop procrastinating:

Answer the question why do you want it/need it? – You’ll answer yourself why it’s important to you and what you get.

Step-by-Step – When you have a task in front of you, divide it into several steps and it will not look so terrible anymore.

Do not wait to feel good to do something, just do it – if you will wait for a good feeling or moment you will only lose your time. Just go, maybe it will not be perfect, but what you’ve done is something better than doing nothing.

This year I made a list of my New Year’s plans for the first time. I intentionally didn’t write New Year’s wishes but rather New Year’s plans because the wishes are one and the plans are quite different.

So, in my New Year’s plans is to work out three times a week. I know, I know, what a cliché. But my exercise experience has always been broken. I would be exercising for 3 days, and then I would give up. After a month I would repeat the same scenario and so on. In October of last year, I started work out again, but I told myself this time I’ll not give up. I practiced for two and a half months. I was proud, but I had some worries, and I started to give up again.

I found the cruel truth. I realized that how I work out, I living my life the same in most aspects.

If you want to do something, if you want it in your life, then make a plan to fit it into your daily routine. Ask why you want it, and if the answer is clear enough then work on that full-time. But step – by – step.

How is my New Year’s Workout Progress going?
The first week was the hardest. I had a bunch of excuses not to work out but also the wrong assumption of why I wanted to do it. Time wasn’t right, it was cold, I was tired…

How did I solve it?

I had to figure out why I was doing this. Although I want a super fit body, for some reason it has never been a good motivator for me. Throughout the workout, I figured I really liked the feeling I was getting after exercise. I became addicted to that feeling. I feel energetic, self-confident and I know I’m doing good for my body.

I went step by step. Although I was telling myself that if I start the workout on Tuesday, I still have time to do my three times a week workout routine, I would dress up my workout clothes at the same time. And that was already the first step. The second step was to tie the tail. Third, turn on some music.

I started with squats. It didn’t matter what kind of exercising I’m doing, the thing was to get started.

I try to apply the same thing to my other aspects of life. But still, it’s not so easy all the time! The more you do, the more and more difficult things come to you. But I believe that when you are doing great things, at first it’s always difficult and life testing you on a daily basis and sometimes everything is against you. And especially then, you find excuses why you shouldn’t do something. But that’s the time when you have to go harder.

Why do you want that? Okay, now don’t wait for the perfect moment to do it because it will not come. Perfectionism is the greatest enemy of productivity. Procrastinating will make the situation even worse. Make the first step, the first smallest step, and complete the step (task). Then make the second step, then the third and so on. Step-by-step.

The feeling you get after is amazing. You will feel like I feel after doing my workout routine, energetic and full of confidence. You will become addicted to that feeling.

Apply this and, I promise, things will be much easier for you.

  1. Do you have any type of pointers for writing write-ups?

That’s where I constantly battle and also I just finish up looking empty screen for long period of time.
